Defeat the Winter Doldrums Dishcloth Exchange

Topic for Week #2

"There are many people who ADORE receiving hand-knit or crochet items; but there are just as many who have no appreciation whatever of how much love, work, and time goes into a hand-made item. Share a story of a hand-made gift you gave to someone and how it worked out - good, bad, or ugly!"

I knit these bed socks for a friend and I was so proud of them! I had only been knitting for about 1 year and it was really a struggle. Upon opening them she replied (not in a good way) "Great, so now every gift I get from you will be knitted." Now that her daughter has learned to knit she doesn't feel that way.......BTW, they were too small - LOL!

Oh man, that would have been a serious crimp in the relationship for me. Back in the 70's, I was knitting bedspread sized afghans for all my sibs (6) and the home, and boyfriends, girlfriends, co-workers and about anyone I could think of. I stayed up til 2 or 3 every morning and pretty much ASSUMED that they would be as loved by them, as by me.

That is horrible I would have been crushed if someone said that to me.

It's funny, my middle daughter, now that she has started to knit herself, is much more appreciative of my knitted gifts. il, my rule is I'l knit for you once, and if you don't appreciate it, never again. But I've been knitting for 60 years. I know that when I first started knitting had my mother critized my knitting that would have been it. Of course, now I know how awful it was. But nary a word about it from my mother. Renate

Jill, that would have crushed me too if someone had said that after I'd been knitting only a year. Now I just don't ever knit for them again. Funny, my middle daughter who has learned how to knit about a year ago, is now much more appreciative of my knitting than she was before she started knitting. Renate
